Guide to Travel Photography - How to Take Great Photos on Holiday

Lisa Michele Burns

We asked travel photographer and founder of The Travel Photography Club, Lisa Michele Burns, to share a few simple ways to approach your travel photography more creatively.

You don’t need the biggest or best camera gear to create memorable travel photographs. Learning to observe a scene, notice what catches your eye and think about how you frame your subject can instantly change the images you bring home.

Look beyond the obvious

Before reaching for your camera, take a moment to look around. Notice the light, where your eye naturally travels and whether moving just a few steps could reveal a stronger composition.

Experiment with your composition

Move beyond eye level. Look for foreground elements, photograph from above or below, and experiment with aperture to see how depth of field can change the way you frame your subject.

Tell more of the story

Alongside the iconic sights, photograph the smaller details and everyday scenes that give a destination its character. Patterns, architecture, food, passing moments and landscapes can all become part of the story.
