What is the weather normally like in Vietnam?

Vietnam has a tropical climate and the weather can vary based on when and where you visit.

Due to its long, narrow shape, Vietnam’s climate is surprisingly complex. There are big variations in climate between the north and south so if you’re exploring the whole country, it’s best to be prepared for anything!

The south is more tropical, with more constant temperatures, whilst the north, has more seasonal variations and can get really quite cold especially the highlands.

  • Northern Vietnam (Hanoi, Sapa) experiences four distinct seasons: warm summers, cool winters, and a mild spring and autumn. The winters can get quite cold, especially in mountainous regions like Sapa.
  • Central Vietnam (Hue, Da Nang, Hoi An) has a more temperate climate, with a rainy season from October to December. Summers are hot and dry.
  • Southern Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta) is warm year-round, with a distinct wet season from May to November. The dry season runs from December to April.

No matter the time of year, packing the right gear can help you navigate the climate with ease.

Packing Essentials for Vietnam travel year-round

1. Lightweight and Breathable Clothing

Vietnam’s climate is typically hot and humid, especially in the south. Breathable clothing made from natural fabrics like cotton or linen is ideal. These materials allow your skin to breathe, helping to keep you cool and comfortable no matter what you've got planned. Loose-fitting clothes are perfect for staying cool, and they also help with mobility if you plan on exploring.

  • T-shirts and tops: Pack a few light, moisture-wicking tops for daily wear. Avoid dark colours as they can absorb more heat.
  • Light pants and shorts: Opt for lightweight trousers and shorts. If you're visiting rural or jungle areas, we suggest packing long pants to protect yourself from mosquitoes.
  • Light jacket or sweater: Even in tropical climates, nights can get cooler, especially in the north. A light jacket, thermals or cardigan is handy for chilly evenings.

2. Rain Gear

As with any holiday, it's wise to prepare for wet weather. This is especially true if you're visiting between July and August, when the weather's warm and prone to burst of rain.

  • Light rain jacket: Choose a breathable, waterproof jacket that won’t trap heat, allowing you to stay dry and comfortable.
  • Umbrella: A small, compact umbrella is useful to carry every day. Ideal when exploring cities like Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City.
  • Waterproof footwear: Comfortable, waterproof shoes are essential for walking in wet conditions. Flip-flops or sandals are great for the beach but may not protect your feet from heavy rain.

3. Footwear

Vietnam is a country of diverse landscapes, from bustling cities to rugged mountain trails. You’ll need durable, comfortable footwear that can handle different environments.

  • Comfortable walking shoes: A good pair of sneakers or sturdy walking shoes is ideal as they are great for exploring cities, temples, and historical sites.
  • Hiking boots: If you plan to visit places like Sapa or hike in national parks, bring lightweight, water-resistant boots.
  • Flip-flops/sandals: These are perfect for the beach or for wearing around your hotel. They’re also ideal for temples and when you need to take your shoes off.
  • Thick socks: Keep your feet dry and protected.

4. Skin Protection

Keep cool, protected and hydrated on your holiday with these sun protection essentials:

  • Sunscreen: A high SPF sunscreen is a must to protect against the sun’s harsh rays. Ensure it stays water-resistant, as you’ll likely sweat or get caught in the rain.
  • Hat and sunglasses: A wide-brimmed hat will protect your face and neck. Sunglasses will shield your eyes from the bright sun.
  • Lip balm with SPF: Don’t forget your lips! A moisturising lip balm with SPF will prevent them from drying out in the heat.
  • Insect Repellent: For those days where you're exploring areas near water, it's always wise to keep the bugs at bay.

5. Travel Accessories to pack for Vietnam

There are a few practical items that will make your trip to Vietnam more comfortable.

  • Daypack: A small, light backpack is perfect for carrying things you need. You can pack water, snacks, sunscreen, and your camera as you explore.
  • Power adapter: Vietnam uses power sockets of type A, C, and D, with a voltage of 220V. Bringing a universal adapter is advisable to ensure you can charge your devices.
  • Water bottle: Stay hydrated by carrying a refillable water bottle with you. Vietnam’s tap water isn’t always safe to drink, so having your own bottle is convenient.

6. Clothing for Cultural Experiences

Vietnam is a conservative country, particularly in rural areas and temples. Dress modestly to respect local customs.

  • Modest tops: When visiting religious sites, it’s important to cover your shoulders and avoid wearing revealing clothing.
  • Long pants: In many temples, visitors may consider shorts or skirts above the knee disrespectful. Wearing long pants or skirts when visiting these places is the best option, but opt for cool, breathable fabric like linen or cotton.
  • Comfortable but respectful attire: Ensure your clothing is suitable for the hot weather but still respectful. Avoid overly casual attire like singlets in sacred places.

7. Health and Safety Items

  • Personal medications: Make sure to carry any prescription medications you may need, along with a copy of your prescription. Bringing a basic first aid kit, including plasters, antiseptic wipes, and pain relievers, is also a good idea.

8. Photography Gear

Vietnam’s scenic beauty, from its lush rice paddies to its dramatic coastlines, offers plenty of opportunities for photos. Make sure to pack the appropriate tech items.

  • Camera and accessories: Whether you use a smartphone or a professional camera, bring extra memory cards and chargers. Don't forget a portable power bank.
